The 20th World Petroleum Congress in Qatar Convention Centre

The 20th World Petroleum Congress (WPC) is being held in Doha this year, from 4-8th December and it will be held in the newly built Qatar Convention Centre in Education City.

Sometimes referred to as “the Olympics” of the petroleum industry, it is a chance for leading members of the industry to showcase technological advances, the role of natural gas and renewable, management of the industry and its social, economic and environmental impact. The theme of the congress is Energy Solutions for All: Promoting Cooperation, Innovation and Investment.

As a triennial, non-profit event, the WPC does not have a position on issues, preferring to act as a platform on which others voice their views and is a non-advocacy, non-political organiation and has been accredited by the UN as a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO).

This year’s congress is already set to eclipse 2008’s, with an attendance increase of 20%. Over the five days in December, WPC expects 5,000 delegates representing 95% of the global market energy.
The Convention Centre in Education City has taken over two years of planning and preparation, and it is spectacularly well done. The façade and structure was inspired by the sidra tree native to Qatar which flourishes in the country’s harsh desert climate. It is also the symbol of Qatar Foundation. The innovative design is by legendary Japanese architect Arata Isozaki and the design was focused on sustainability, with the solar panels providing 12.5% of the centre’s energy and has been built to the highest green building standards.

In the lobby there is a sculpture by famed artist Louise Bourgeois, of a spider called “Maman” continuing the nature theme.

On Tuesday 25th Marhaba was invited down to the Convention Centre in Education City, for a tour. First, we had a couple of speeches, one from Mr Issa Al-Ghanim who said he was very proud the 20th World Petroleum Congress and Exhibition was being held in Qatar and invited us to join in the celebration.

After that we were given a tour around the centre, seeing firsthand the exhibition space, which is vast, all the many meeting rooms, and the wonderful theatre, in which Kevin Spacey is going to perform Richard III in December, culminating in lunch, where they showed of the skills of their in house 5 star catering.
